Have you always wanted to become a song writer?
If you are creative with an interest in music and language, chances are that you’ve wondered how to write your own song. Songwriting is not only a highly sought after skill, but it can also be a very therapeutic form of writing and expression of your inner emotions.
When you’re thinking about writing a song, you’ll need to decide whether you will write the melody and the lyrics yourself, requiring a basic knowledge of music theory and at least one instrument, or whether you will write only the lyrics and find a collaborator to help you write the melody.
Some songwriters prefer to create the melody and the lyrics together as an organic unit. Others write the music first and find words to fit the tune, or write the lyrics first and then set it to music. All of these are valid ways to write songs, and you should find the method that works best for you. This may require some experimentation to see what “feels” best for your writing process.
As with all other writing, the golden rule in writing song lyrics is to write about what you know. If you have experience or an interest in writing poetry, this could be helpful as well. Writing beautifully about a theme that you feel intensely about is one of the best ways to ensure that your lyrics are powerful and meaningful.
When thinking about how to write lyrics, it can be helpful to decide what genre your song will be and whether it will be a song sung by a male or a female. This can guide your creative process towards certain conventions that can make it easier to write your song and lyrics. You will also need to consider song structure when you are writing a song. Most songs follow the same song structure, with some slight variations in the song parts:
- Verse 1
- Chorus
- Verse 2
- Chorus
- Bridge
- Chorus
- Fin
The chorus parts would normally be a repetition of the same verse, set to a memorable and catchy refrain. The bridge is exactly what it sounds like – a new verse that is set to slightly different music to transition between the choruses, making the song more interesting. Not all songs have a bridge, although most hit pop songs do.
It is important to realize that in order to achieve any success at all in songwriting, you must know the ins and outs of songwriting as well as the industry. Knowing how to ‘sell’ songs is just as important as knowing how to write them.
Even seasoned and well-known songwriters know that only a handful of the songs you write will ever be recorded by an artist if you don’t have the right approach and the right networks. Although you should concentrate on making each song you write as good as you possibly can, you must also remember that the more songs you write, the better you’ll become at writing songs.
